Six Democratic candidates will take the stage in Des Moines, Iowa tonight in the first presidential debate of 2020. It airs at 9pm EST on CNN. Meanwhile, Sen. Cory Booker dropped out of the race for president yesterday. Booker thanked his supporters but said “there’s no longer a path to victory.”

Russian spies hacked Ukrainian gas company:
 
Security experts say Russian military spies hacked the Ukrainian gas company at the heart of the impeachment of President Trump. Russian hacking attempts against Burisma reportedly began in November. It’s not clear what, if anything, the hackers found, but Russia could be looking for embarrassing material on the Bidens in order to influence the U.S. election.

Shooting at Navy base was an “act of terrorism”: 
The Justice Department concluded the deadly shooting at a Navy base in Pensacola, FL last month was an act of terrorism. U.S. Attorney General William Barr says “jihadist ideology” prompted a Saudi pilot to open fire, killing three people and wounding eight others. More than 20 Saudi students from the same training program have been removed and sent home. Barr and the FBI are now asking Apple for help unlocking the shooter’s phones, but the tech giant says it sets a bad precedent.

MLB cheating scandal leads to lost jobs: 
The MLB concluded that the Houston Astros cheated by using a camera to steal signs back in 2017 (the year they won the World Series). The team will face one of the most severe punishments in league history: a $5 million fine, the loss of its draft picks in 2020 and 2021 and the suspension of the team’s manager and general manager. Then, the Astros owner took it a step further and fired both men.

LSU wins National Championship: 
LSU won college football’s National Championship, beating Clemson 42-25 last night. It ended Clemson’s winning streak of 29 straight games.

Queen supports Harry and Meghan’s new life: 
The Queen is now supporting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s plan to step back from their roles as full-time 'senior royals.' She agreed to a “period of transition” so the couple can spend time in Canada and the U.K. while establishing financial independence.

Amazon's controversial donation to Australia's fire relief: 
Amazon is donating $1 million AUD to the wildfire relief efforts in Australia, which works out to about $690,000 USD. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is worth an estimated $116 billion, so some say he should have contributed more. Others feel it's still generous. Meanwhile, the Australian government is dropping carrots and sweet potatoes from helicopters and planes in an effort to help stranded wildlife. An estimated 1 billion animals have died in the ongoing bushfires.

Stardust is oldest stuff on Earth:
Stardust from in a space rock found in Australia in 1969 is believed to be older than the moon, Earth and the solar system itself. Researchers now say the meteorite’s mineral dust is seven billion years old -- 2.5 billion years older than Earth.

Corvette named car of the year: 
The redesigned Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was named the top 'Car of the Year' in North America. 'SUV of the Year' went to the Kia Telluride, and 'Truck of the Year' went to the Jeep Gladiator. Fifty test-drivers voted to decide which cars take the top spots.
